Corinth
sees gain in sales tax
Corinth gained some ground in its share of sales tax
revenue this month, offsetting losses that opened fiscal
2009.
Corinth City Clerk Vickie Roach said she was pleasantly
surprised to see a 4 percent gain in the latest sales
tax check.
Four months into fiscal 2009, that gain was enough to
bring year-to-date collections within about $200 of the
same point in fiscal 2008. The tally for the year stands
at $1,795,849.11.
The city's latest deposit is $469,496.76, a 4 percent
gain from the same month a year earlier. That follows
back-to-back months of negative growth to start the year
and a slim gain of less than 1 percent last month.
With the gain in January's deposit, Corinth went against
the general trend across the state, which saw a 3 percent
decrease for the month in year-to-year comparisons.

CPD
official named Law Enforcement Officer of Year
The Corinth Police Department's top sleuth has been honored
with a major award from the state prosecutor's association.
CPD Detective Captain Ralph Dance was recently selected
as the law enforcement officer of the year by the Mississippi
Attorney General and Mississippi Prosecutor's Association.
The award was presented by prosecutor's association President
and local Assistant District Attorney Arch Bullard.
Dance is a veteran investigator, having taken the helm of
CPD's investigations division approximately six years ago
following a career as chief investigator for the Corinth
office of the district attorney.
The detective also is a founder and leader of the police
department's Special Response Team and has played a key
role in working with local schools to create a response
plan for potential incidents on campus. CPD Chief David
Lancaster said Dance plays a vital role in the department
as head of a division that must deal with the most serious
offenses officers must handle.
"I depend a lot on Ralph to lead the detective division.
The detective division gets lost sometimes because they're
not on the street and visible, but it's a very important
role in the department because they deal mainly with felony
crimes and violent crime," he said.
Lancaster said Dance's strong memory for faces and facts
and his attention to detail are a big part of what make
him an effective investigator.
Bullard, who nominated Dance for the award, said he's known
the detective since the mid-1990s when Dance began his career
as a detective with CPD before coming to work at the district
attorney's office for five years.
"I've seen him in several different roles in law enforcement.
He's a very conscientious, very motivated, concerned law
enforcement officer. Not only is he good at responding to
crime and solving crime, but he's also interested in trying
to head things off," said the assistant district attorney.
Bullard also said Dance has a great way with people and
is a font of information on people throughout the county.
Dance said he's thankful and humbled by the honor, but is
quick to shrug off any personal credit, instead crediting
his fellow officers for their commitment to the serving
the community.
"This is a team effort. When you're surrounded by good
cops, it's hard not to succeed," he said.
Dance is not the only member of the Corinth Police Department
receiving honors recently. Captain Chuck Hinds received
third place awards for both team and individual sniper during
the recent state tactical team competition and training
meeting.
